Carl decides it’s time to leave Sydney and head up the East coast. And what better way to head up the coast than on a 5 day surfing trip. He’s never surfed before, but Carl, his mate Jim and 30 other travellers are all about to embark on the trip of a lifetime. Surfing some of the best waves Australia has to offer, exploring out of the way bays and getting to know everyone very well indeed as they camp on the beaches.
Meanwhile Daniele is heading up to Byron Bay on the Oz Experience party bus. She’s given up her job at home in Tesco and is keen to experience some of the real Australia. She goes wine tasting for the first time, bush walking in the country and tries her hand at horseriding at one of Australia’s finest outback horse studs. All in all Daniele definitely thinks she prefers this lifestyle to the check out chick 9-5.
Byron Bay is Australia’s prime hippy hangout and a must for backpackers. It’s here they take time out to chill out and get off the beer bus for a while. We check out the Arts Factory hostel which is one of the most famous backpacker hangouts in Australia.
This is where the talented ‘travellers’ spend some serious time meditating and being peaceful! Backpackers find this place the perfect hideaway from real life whilst they enjoy making jewellery, painting, drawing, playing instruments, making didgeridoos or just hanging out in their camper vans.
Meet North, he’s from Canada and he thinks he’s a real hippy traveler – he’s been at the Arts Factory for 3 months so far and has no intention to leave just yet. He’s happy cracking whips, giving advice to other travellers and playing with his (crystal) balls.
There’s Celine, the French girl who’s come to “catch the biggest wave in Byron Bay” and Chris from Brighton who’s working at the juice shop but also came to find the perfect wave. But watchout - if Cockatoo Paul catches you, you’ll be herded off on one of his bush walks or end up belly dancing at the local talent evening.
We also meet Hannah from Devon, she’s enjoying her gap year in Oz traveling around in her “wicked” camper van and decides to head up to Nimbin, the Amsterdam of Australia to see what the vibe is really like.
We're still heading up the East Coast of Queensland and still following Carl and Jim on their surfing safari. Meanwhile Hannah from Devon has hired a wicked camper and is on a self-drive mission. She's popping into Nimbin to see what the score is there.
