The first AFP Big Air event of the 2013/14 World Tour calendar will see the Toyota One Hit Wonder Big Air return to Thredbo in the New South Wales Snowy Mountains. The Southern Hemisphere's only Gold level Big Air will again see local and international professional skiers battle it out to kick-start their AFP (Association of Freeskiing Professionals) World Tour points tally in the biggest freeski event in the country.
In a first for the Australian mountains, the 2013 Big Air competition will take place as part of EFTERSKI FESTIVAL; the biggest line up of DJs and bands ever seen in the Snowy Mountains. Presented by Rekorderlig Cider & One Hit Wonder, the winter sports and music event will feature an alpine dual giant slalom, pond skim, film competition and movie premieres alongside live international DJ’s and bands.
“The Big Air has always been the highlight of the Southern Hemisphere calendar. Now it seems like this week has grown to a whole new level that has been missing from the Australian Alps.” – Salomon Freeski Team Athlete, Jordan Houghton, 2012 3rd place in the Toyota One Hit Wonder Big Air.
The highlight in the Thredbo Alpine Village will be the EFTERSKI FESTIVAL music, presented by Rekorderlig Cider. This unique music festival will see an array of International and Australian musicians flock to Thredbo to entertain revellers after days spent skiing and snowboarding the best spring snow conditions in one of the most pristine and unique environments in Australia.
The Alpine Knockout dual giant slalom will see past and present World Cup and Winter Olympic team members partner up to race head-to-head over pro jumps in a bid to stake a claim in the $10,000 prize purse.
No snow festival would be complete without a pond skim. The first ever Rhythm Skim Showdown invites resort revellers to don their finest fancy dress and skim their skis or snowboards across the custom pond for cash and glory. "The rhythm skim showdown is about good times, crowd interaction and carnage. We are stoked to be bringing a bit of fun back into the Australian event schedule. From snowboarders to tobogganers to monoskiers, this is a day that everyone can get involved in." – Matt Hampton, former universe monoski champion.
Those who want to kick back and relax, can choose to enjoy screenings of the Contour Rookie Films finalists or indulge in the Rekorderlig Hot Pools at the Alpine Hotel, heated to mirror Scandinavia’s natural springs.
2013 brings a new edge to what has grown into a world-class event, where Rekorderlig Cider and the One Hit Wonder crew join forces to kick off the Australian festival season – a week of fun and frivolity both on and off the slopes in the biggest festival of action sports, film and live music above the snowline.
The Toyota One Hit Wonder Big Air kicks off on the 10th of September with the EFTERSKI FESTIVAL really heating up the village towards the end of the week from the 12th-14th of September. With exclusive 3-night accommodation specials run from Thursday 12th to Sunday 15th of September starting at $165 including the FESTIVAL WRISTBAND, the EFTERSKI FESTIVAL is not to be missed.
Jindaybe local Russ Henshaw has taken out the double crown, winning the People’s Choice award after placing first in Australia’s first gold ranked AFP (Association of Freeskiing Professionals) big air event. Henshaw’s Southern Hemisphere first, a technical triple cork 1440 closely edged out Canadian Jaeden Schneider-Clark’s stylish switch 1080, stalefish grab.
Henshaw takes home an additional $5,000 cash prize after conquering an international field of some of the world’s best freeskiers, kicking off a successful competition season with Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic in his sights. The People’s Choice big air tricks were filmed over the biggest jump ever seen in Australia at Thredbo Alpine Resort, and were self-selected by each athlete as the trick they felt would impress the online public audience the most.
“This week has the most relaxed and fun vibe to it, which always brings on the crazy tricks. To come out on top feels amazing! I wanna thank everyone for helping me with the win!” said Henshaw from his high country villa.
The Toyota One Hit Wonder has once again fostered enormous progression as Australia’s biggest skiing event. The athlete driven competition continues to support the development of tomorrow’s Winter Olympic champions and better next year.
A few extended side-by-side shots from the Contour Plus, Canon 7D, Red Epic & Phantom Flex camera's that we had pointed at the Rav4's whilst shooting the intro for the 2012 Toyota One Hit Wonder Down Under.
I must say one camera stands out just a little compared to the others...
