Join us in the CFMDC Secret Cinema to ruminate on the relationship between the artist-filmmaker, his/her materials and the nature of film print distribution and preservation. Producing and exhibiting work on film is under a growing threat due to the perceived production and exhibition expenses associated with celluloid. As digital cinema technologies take hold of the film industry, a ripple effect occurs, deteriorating infrastructures that previously supported celluloid based independent and avant-garde filmmaking. This situation bares acute significance for the CFMDC, an organization that embraces independent digital cinema while also encouraging and preserving work produced and screened on celluloid. As such, this curated loop of short films explores the practice of artists working with celluloid in a contemporary setting. It is telling that by presenting these films via a digital platform, we are preserving the original film prints, which would most certainly be damaged by a full night of repeated mechanical projection.
