“Tyler can hear more than what most people can hear…he is really picking up on the details of sound…[because] he is inside of it.” -Grammy Award winning musician and founder of Woodstock Chimes, Garry Kvistad.

And he’s only eight years old.

“Chimes for Tyler” is a story about a boy with autism named Tyler Doi who loves wind chimes.

We met up with him and his parents, Sean and Alison, on a trip to one of Tyler’s favorite places, Woodstock Chimes. Tyler has been classified as an autistic savant, and as such, he has an exceptional skill in a very specific area. In Tyler’s case, he can distinguish the sounds of the entire inventory of Woodstock’s chimes. And he can do this all by sound alone, without having to see the chimes.

Woodstock Chimes is based out of Shokan, New York and they are the largest distributors of wind chimes in the world. Each one of their wind chimes is painstakingly tuned to compositions and scales from around the world. They also create “Charitable Chimes”, such as the “Chimes for Autism”, which raises cultural awareness for and provides financially support to Autism research.

We couldn’t wait to see Tyler’s amazing hearing talent for ourselves. So we set up a chime identifying challenge between Garry and Tyler to really show off Tyler’s unusual talent. And Tyler blew us (and Garry) away.

It has been our pleasure to meet the great people at Woodstock Chimes as well as the Doi family and we are proud to share their story.
