  3. those who have been to Whistler in Vancouver, Canada know just how stunning of a backdrop it is. for Cath and Kevin, it was also a place with great significance. Vancouver, nature, and hiking all mean a ton to both of them. Kevin, as you'll learn in the film, proposed to Cath while on a hike with the family. proposing with family around isn't the most conventional way to do it, but it certainly is their way to do it. on the wedding day, Kevin's sister officiated the wedding and it provided such an interesting twist for us to have the officiant getting ready with the family, helping with the vows, and discussing what she wanted to say at the ceremony.

Cath and Kevin had just flown in from Hong Kong and we gathered in the living room of their rental cottage a couple days before the wedding. Cath mentioned how you rarely look up in Hong Kong and that the Whistler was so inspiring that you were always looking up. she wanted to take her friends and family on a hike the day before the wedding so they could really experience Whistler and take it all in. we knew that hiking played a large role in their relationship so of course we would need to join in on the hiking adventure.

as a storyteller, having a unique situation like this makes it so exciting to just dive in and find a totally new way to tell a story. a story that would only fit Cath and Kevin. preparation is such a huge part of telling a story effectively, something we will explore at great length on our KNOW tour starting this coming week. however, preparation is only a part of the puzzle. especially when you shoot events, being able to anticipate whats coming and make relevant decisions in a split second is something that we are always pushing ourselves to be better at. the exciting part is that the more we get to know the characters in any of our films wedding or otherwise, the more these decisions seems to flow through you in the moment right before they happen. i look at Cath and Kevin's speech and how we shot it as a perfect illustration of this. i don't know if we've ever shot a speech this way and i also don't know that anybody could predict there would be such a wonderful dialogue between them during the speech. knowing them and knowing the story allowed us to really make the most of this and cover it in a way that wasn't just different but was also so so fitting to their story. in watching their film countless times myself, one of my favorite elements is how they interact during their speech and how the focus pulls us into the both of their minds while also building the interaction between them. we often look at things like this wonder how much of it is luck that we just happen to be in the right place in the right time to cover something so effectively. after a while of consistently finding yourself in the perfect place as something happens you start to see more clearly all of the little things that can go into creating your own luck.

in traveling to so many places across the world it is so easy to not take the time to really take a place in and experience it. taking the time to join in on things like this hike provide us with a great storytelling element but are also such an amazing way to really experience the locations for ourselves.

the soundtrack for this piece was a little tougher for me to arrive at. Cath and Kevin are both very thoughtful and romantic while also being very fun-loving and silly. i really wanted to bring in both of these elements into their story as it is such a big part of who they are, but that certainly presented a challenge in finding the perfect track. their fun-loving and silly side felt better with a more upbeat track while their romantic and thoughtful side really felt right with something slower and more powerful. to try and sort through this, i emailed Michelle at With Etiquette (our music licensing collective) and shared with her more on Cath and Kevin and the story i was trying to tell. she sent back a handful of scratch tracks to audition and, in the end, two of them fit together so well and just felt perfect for their film. we don't usually use more than one track for a highlights piece but we also try and stay away from doing what is 'usually' done so we looked at what this piece called for and it certainly fit. if you are working on a piece and want help finding the perfect track, i definitely recommend emailing the WE team and sharing more info with them on what you are looking for. before Michelle gets bombarded with emails i should say they recently added a pretty cool Wizard feature to help you find the right track through their website, which is also a great resource.

the first track is Peace Song (instrumental) by Kye Kye and the second track is Million Miles by Josh Garrels. it's pretty neat that Josh is friends with Kye Kye and here they find themselves in the same love story :) both are available at WithEtiquette.com
