1. As soon as I heard about the qscale availability I loaded on my camera a tested every setting, +16 through -16. Here is a video showing them in ascending order according to bitrate. It seems like it records in VBR because -16 only produced around 40 mbit/sec, except for the shot of the carpet where it hit 82mbit/sec! What do you make of the lower than expected bitrates?

    Link to firmware:

    Main 550d branch:

Note: The video was compressed at 10mbit/sec for web, I will upload a less compressed version later. At q-15 the banding was gone from the wall.

    ISO 200 f/3.5 1/50th

It seems that the higher the ISO, the higher the bitrate becomes, which means you must lower the qscale to compensate.

  2. Some very quick tests with the new build of the Magic Lantern Firmware, implementing the amazing focus-assist feature. Its available from ML Menu - Video - Focus assist.

Its still in a very early stage, but more than usable by now.

    Release notes by alex (thanks!)

    Known bugs:

    * it's easily fooled by contrast (or lack of it)
    * it may display red markers even if there's nothing in focus

    Implementation details:

    * Only horizontal edges are detected.
    * Only adjacent pixels which fit in an int32 are considered.
    * Threshold: 1% percentile.
    * When recording, HD buffer is downsampled horizontally by 2.

    * Fixed the saving bug (you can now save the Focus Peak setting).
    * Added some kind of color coding (warmer is better)
    * Small optimizations (I'm not sure if they have any effect or not).

  3. The Magic Lantern firmware for the Canon 5D Mark II adds the ability to display depth of field information, including hyperfocal distance, for lenses that report distance information. Most genuine Canon lenses do so, and all L series lenses report fairly accurate distance measurements.

The firmware also adds a "focus stacking" exposure mode that takes a configurable number of exposures with pre-programmed focus distance steps between them.
