1. Raise the River is a public engagement campaign led by the Redford Center, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Sonoran Institute, Environmental Defense Fund, the Nature Conservancy, and Pronatura Noreste.

This cross-border, cross-sector effort is focused on reconnecting the Colorado River to the Gulf of California and restoring life to the river’s delta.

Our first campaign milestone is to raise $10 million USD by 2017. We are over 90 percent of the way there. The funds will be used to conduct essential restoration work and acquire water rights dedicated to the region.

The delta is the most broken reach of the Colorado. If we can fix the delta, we can demonstrate that no place is beyond hope.

  2. In March 2014, the Colorado River reconnected with the ocean for the first time in 60 years. This was the result of the historic Minute 319 bi-national alliance between the U.S. and Mexican governments to restore this region, which enabled the March 2014 pulse flow, the first bi-national deliberate release of water into the Colorado River delta.

With this water came life. From the time the river began to flow once again, the waters attracted migrating birds and moistened the soil to welcome native tree seeds carried on the wind. One year later, we have seen that the return of water to this region has brought back much of the native plant, bird and animal life that has been absent for many years.

What has been accomplished in the past year?
    • Restoration of 654 acres of riparian habitat
    • Planting of more than 160,000 native trees
    • Raised 93% of the first $10 million campaign milestone

Beyond the original environmental objectives, the overall results have been much richer – the community’s engagement with the river has given rise to community pride and new forms of economic opportunity for the region’s residents.

Executive Produced and Narrated by Robert Redford and Directed by award-winning filmmaker, Mark Decena, WATERSHED tells the story of the threats to the once-mighty Colorado River and offers solutions for the future of the American West.

As the most dammed, dibbed, and diverted river in the world struggles to support thirty million people and the peace-keeping agreement known as the Colorado River Pact reaches its limits, WATERSHED introduces hope.

Can we meet the needs of a growing population in the face of rising temperatures and lower rainfall in an already arid land? Can we find harmony amongst the competing interests of cities, agriculture, industry, recreation, wildlife, and indigenous communities with rights to the water?

The Redford Center created WATERSHED as a inspirational social action tool for people who want to engage. Promoting personal water conservation pledges of 5% – symbolic of the small amount of the rivers’ flow required to reconnect the river to its delta – and garnering donations to help purchase the water rights necessary to restore the connectivity, WATERSHED is a central tool in a larger grassroots effort focused on saving the Colorado River and supporting the communities throughout the river basin.
