  4. The Sensorium is known as the "seat of sensation" where the organism experiences and interprets the environment in which it lives. A montage of video and audio collected during my stint as a night cabby in Portland, Or. the piece reflects not just the experience of being a cab driver, something that many non-cabbies are often keen to find out, but also refers to our states as sensory organisms and how our mind pieces the blizzard of sensations.

  5. The 'Bateys' or sugar cane cutting communities in rural Dominican Republic have long been neglected by the government and private sugar corporations. Dr. Jorge Volquez has dedicated his professional life to providing primary and preventative health care to community of "Batey 7" and surrounding areas. This is glimpse into life in Batey 7 and Dr. Jorge Volquez in action, directing a humanitarian medical mission.

I first met Dr. Volquez in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. I was struck by his cheerful laugh and his calm dedication to helping the people of the Batey. We discussed producing a video piece and decided that it would be best if we accompanied him for a weekend on a short medical mission. The video starts with Dr. Jorge showing the batey and providing a peak into the world of the sugar cane cutters, many who work long hours for very little pay. The second part of the video was shot the next day and shows Dr. Volquez and the American volunteers from Dream Ministries operating a primary care clinic in a grade school. It was a challenge to create this without falling into various cliched traps of heroic medicine and helpless victims. Thanks for watching and please let me know what you think!

Weekly video updates of our adventures and misadventures as we try to make our first documentary. The subject: traditional medicine in the Dominican Republic (which also happens to be Jolene's Fulbright subject). We are starting out just about as basic as you can get. For equipment we have, in the camera department, an Ultra-HD FlipCam and in the audio - a Zoom H2 field recorder. We also have a tripod, headphones, a reflector, a reflector stand, a bunch of rechargeable batteries, and a MacBookPro that I had to walk a lot of dogs in the Upper East Side to get. So, if you are are going to try and do something like this, hopefully our experiences will be helpful!
