  5. The Bronx Music Heritage Center & The Pregones Theatre hosted Bronx Living Legend Eugene “Gene” Golden on October 5, 2011 for an evening of music and celebration. Mr. Golden has played a key role in the evolution of NYC’s Latin music scene for the past four decades. He has mastered Afro-Cuban and Yoruba musical traditions and has created a fusion of these and many popular drumming styles. As a key member of several local music groups and teacher of a weekly drumming class for 4-8 year olds, Gene is dedicated to passing on these musical traditions.

Introduction by Angel R. Rodriguez Sr. & Irahim Gonazlez; interview & Visual Presentation by Gene Golden and Angel R. Rodriguez; award presentation by Nancy Biberman, president of WHEDco.

Performance by Gene Golden with Clemente Medina and his group, Los Amigos (Union City, NJ): Giosvani, George, Montanzas, and singers Pedro, Chino, and Pescao. Guest dancer Tito SanDuval. Closing remarks by Bill Aguado. Special thanks to Alvan Colon-Lespier of Pregones Theatre and to Erin Burns-Maine and Kerry McLean of WHEDco.

A big thanks to our media sponsor, Bronx Net as well as Bronx Living Legends' sponsor The Point CDC. This event was made possible by Bronx Lebanon Hospital, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, and WHEDco.
