1. Don’t be afraid of setting goals. Don’t be afraid of failure. What’s failure is not trying. Failure is not trying to achieve those goals. To achieve those goals takes steps, and those steps you take to achieve this goal – achieve those goals is about dedication, commitment, and sacrifice. The more you commit, the more you can dedicate, and the more you have that sacrifice in your life, the better off you will be able to achieve your goals.

  2. A lot of times in life you need to talk to yourself. When I say “talk to yourself,” tell yourself very positive things. Reinforce some of the things you need to hear from yourself by telling yourself that. It is very important that you do that in life. It is very important that you share with people your thoughts, your ideals if you care about them. Don’t assume that people know your goals. Don’t assume that people understand what you’re trying to achieve.

  3. Sometimes there’s a force out there that never want to see people succeed. There’s a force out there that don’t want you to achieve your goals. And they’re happy about that. So you cannot let that force or those individuals try to stop you from achieving your goals. Anybody who tries to stop you from moving ahead or making a positive decision, you have to just move on from them and tell yourself, “I will not be denied.” Just keep telling yourself, “I will not be denied.” If your goal is to make Olympic team, your goal is to make that freshman soccer team, tell yourself “I will not be denied.”

  4. Attitude. I love using the word “attitude” because people today don’t really understand how to keep a positive attitude. No matter how bad adversity is, no matter how bad the situation is, or how good the situation is, you must maintain a positive attitude. If it’s real good don’t think you’re better than the next person. If it’s real bad don’t think that you’re as worse as the next person. Just stay positive, stay neutral, stay balanced, and keep a positive attitude.

  5. Always do your best and never give up. And the reason why I say always do your best is because in 1988 I was in Seoul, Korea, in the Olympics, and I was in the blocks. I’m getting ready to run the biggest race of my life, or one of the biggest races in my life, and I told myself – I was so pumped up, so nervous, this was my first Olympics, and I said to myself, you know, “Butch, you don’t have to do your best. You know, you did your best a month ago and you own – you beat the world by ten yards. Just beat him by five yards and then get your medal and head back to Ohio.”
Well anyway, because I told myself that I didn’t have to do my best. And what happened? The gun went up, I found myself in sixth place, and I found myself winning a silver medal in 1988 Olympics, because I told myself I didn’t have to do my best. So now my motto is always do your best. And once you get in the habit of doing your best it’s a great place to be. You’ll be surprised how productive you will be. You will be surprised how much more efficient and how much more successful you will be by just doing your best.
