This video was filmed at the event of a play shown at the crescent arts centre in Belfast in affiliation with The British Council. The play was called 'The Hijabi Monolgues' and looks at the experiences of muslim women in Ireland. It has been adapted to reflect life in Ireland and is an evolution from a sister play originating in the US of the same name. The play will go on to be adpated and shown around Europe from here on. This video documents the event and garners the local expectations and reactions from the local audience. Video shot and edited by Mike Lockhart
This video was created for an event at the European Commission in Belfast, addressing the questions of citizenship in Northern Ireland. It was commissioned and produced by Liz Nelson and Felice Kiel from NICEM http://www.nicem.org.uk/ and was directed by myself. Assisting with sound was Meriem Naili.
We shot in several locations: Ballymena, Stormont Buildings, Lisburn, NICEM's offices in Belfast, and the waterfront in Belfast, all while meeting an incredibly diverse range of people. Northern Ireland is fast becoming a vibrant, mulitcultural melting pot of people and culture, many of whom consider Northern Ireland their home.
This short film was produced as part of my MA in film, which i completed this year. It was shot with next to no budget and mostly relied on favours from people I had worked with before and a few trays of tasty sandwiches.. Somehow I managed to gather a crew together and we shot most of the main scenes in one day in Bangor Marina and Ballyholme, Co.Down. It is a story about a local fisherman and his younger brother, looking at how we deal with loss; an occupational hazard for those who make their living on a fishing boat.
Storehouse partners with many different charities and agencies throughout Belfast, who work day in and day out with families and individuals in difficult situations.
Through these partnerships Storehouse forms connections with those most genuinely in need. Often, through no fault of their own, or through poor choices, they've found themselves caught in cycles of poverty that seem impossible to break. Storehouse aims to help break those cycles by providing emergency food packages for a set period of time.
