Mount Isa sporting fans would recognise Phil as ‘The guy on the gate… the bloke with the big, cheeky grin.

On 27th December, 1999, Phil and his mate were on their way from Mount Isa to Townsville when they were involved in a single vehicle accident. Phil suffered a serious brain injury and spent 46 weeks in hospital (Townsville General Hospital – 12 weeks, Princess Alexandra’s Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit – 34 weeks) where he underwent intensive physio, speech and occupational therapies. His relentless determination and spirit, combined with the love and support of his family, enabled him to eventually return home to Mount Isa where rehabilitation is an ongoing process.

This documentary began as a means of sharing Phil’s passion for sport. However, there is so much more to Phil and, subsequently, this became the story of a local hero and his insatiable passion for life.

His love of life is displayed in everything he does and all the milestones he has achieved in overcoming challenges such as learning to walk again, gaining full-time employment, getting back his driver’s licence, helping at sporting gates, participating in the Commonwealth Games Baton Relay, and the list goes on and on. Phil is an inspiration to all who meet him.

Sharing Phil’s story has been not only a privilege but also a very humbling experience. Life is a gift that has been given to Phil not once, but twice, and he has embraced every precious moment of it to make the most of each day.
