December 23 was the Emperor of Japan's birthday, who was born on December 23, 1933 at the Imperial Palace, Tokyo. On his birthday every year, the gates of palace are thrown open and the general public is allowed inside, usually to give a hearty round of, "Tennouheika banzai" (which I usually translate just as, "Hurray for the Emperor"), is given, followed by a short acceptance speech by the Emperor who also gives his thoughts on the past year's happenings in Japan. It really is a nice event and over recent years has seen a large number of overseas visitors taking part as well.
It's an amazing event, but if you ever go just prepared for the crowds!
A really fantastic car event in Japan, held at the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba prefecture each year in January. Everything a car lover could possibly near is there - customisation, parts and ... girls! A tremendous event, I think it is far more entertaining than the Tokyo Motor Show.
The Awa Odori is an amazing festival with a long history. Brought to Tokyo in the 1950s it's is now one of the city's most important cultural events with over 10000 performers and watched by one million people over the two days it is held. Shot with a Sony RX10.
September 18, 2014 and the Tokyo Game Show kicked off at Makuhari Messe in Chiba again. This footage is from the first media day of the event. I really enjoyed it and this year we saw a record number of exhibitors, with 421 companies displaying their products from 32 different countries. I saw a lot of great stuff and just a pity I hardly had a chance to play anything myself, but at least I got to see it and talk to a few people!
