In this final segment we start with looking at a rear hoof of my Paso Fino mare - Serena. I wanted to show her hoof because she truly has the best hooves of my horses. Part of it is genetic, she is of spanish breeding, reported to have some of the best designed hooves that touch the ground. The other factor of course is the maintainance and lifestyle I afford my horses. Notice the digital cushion at the back of the hoof, WOW!!! Can you see now what a well developed cushion can mean for comfort and optimum mechanism? Also, as I mention in the video, her central sulcus (center of frog) is just slightly dished and ends about half way to tip (apex) of frog. This tells us that underneath there is good "layering" of mechanism and placement of bone to tissue to blood vessel. You would never know by looking at this hoof that when I got this mare 3 yrs ago, she was 9 years old and had her hooves trimmed only once, just before I got her, by putting her in a tipping table (contraption to hold & tip a horse to do their feet). She had somewhat contracted feet then and they were very flat. Now she has concavity (dishing of the sole) great structure and soundness. Shows what a great trim and health program can do to improve even an untouched hoof!
