This was the project for which I pressed pause on my work as a digital media executive. It is truly the penultimate human adventure possible to mount today. A scripted unscripted television series that marries the best of dramatic filmed entertainment, video games, simulation, alternative reality games, transmedia audience engagement and the hero's journey-- XQuest.
I created the show I was originally partnered with Ron Howard, Fox Network, Alex Seropian ("Halo") and Brady Connell ("Amazing Race" "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" etc).
XQuest turned out to have the budget and schedule requirements of a theatrical film or video game-- 2 years and $30million. But all that fueled a television series, MMOG and mobile experience. It turned out to be a mismatch for Fox Network's silo'd television business model, typical production schedules, understanding of what the gamer audience is (broad, very broad) and appetite for risk.
