1. SCREEN SLATE PRESENTS
THE 162ND ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF EDGAR ALLAN POE

    Friday, October 7 at Midnight

LA CHUTE DE LA MAISON USHER
Jean Epstein with Luis Buñuel, 1928, 63 min. France. Silent film with score and French intertitles read in English.

    TOBY DAMMIT
Federico Fellini, 37 min. Italy. In its rare, original English soundtrack.

Edgar Allan Poe was discovered delirious on the streets of Baltimore the morning of Sunday, October 7, 1849, and died shortly after. On the 162nd anniversary of his death, at midnight, Spectacle and Screen Slate pay tribute with the two greatest films inspired by his work. Jean Epstein’s La Chute De La Maison Usher is a classic of silent cinema renowned for its expressionist set design, eerie location photography and haunting atmosphere. Toby Dammit manages to fit all Fellini’s signature themes and visual tropes into a 37-minute masterpiece, nearly half of which is an epic, foreboding nighttime sports car chase. It also features one Terrence Stamp’s greatest performances, here presented in an HD version that restores Stamp’s original English dialog, previously dubbed into Italian.
