A compilation of shots in San Francisco that I filmed over a two day period while testing a GoPro Hero 3.
This is also my first attempt at video production, encorporating a variety of different video editing suites including Adobe After Effects CS6, Adobe Premiere CS6 and GoPro Cineform Studio.
I was fairly impressed with the majority of the footage that I was able to gather from the camera, all clips were recorded at 1080p resolution set at 60fps. I did experiment with a wide variety of settings on the Hero 3 including 720p at 120fps and 1080p at several different frame rates. Overall I decided to stick with 1080p @ 60fps as this seemed to deliver the best results and made for some cool shots once slowed to the standard 24fps.
My workflow consisted mainly of importing footage from the camera straight into Cineform Studio where I would edit the frame rate as well as apply any color correction before exporting to After Effects to apply the finishing touches and further frame rate adjustments like that seen in some of the very slow scenes. Finally all the footage was brought together and rendered out in Adobe Premiere along with the sound effects being added.
Most of the ambient noise used came straight from the camera with the exception of a few effects such as the rain in the beginning and seagulls on the pier as the sound from those clips included too much distortion or ended up being covered by my finger on the actual device.
I also experimented with a variety of night time shots but found them overall too full of grain and noise to be appreciated. The GoPro definitely excels in day time usage.
The man near the big Xmas tree at the end was actually doing a live performance of "California Dreamin'" which is what inspired the music in the end credits. The first song I simply stumbled upon through hype machine and found rather relaxing.
