The Toronto Port Authority is building a pedestrian tunnel across Toronto's Western Gap to connect Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport to the mainland. The project, which began in March 2012, will be completed in 2015. Once completed, the walkway will be the world's first underwater pedestrian tunnel to an airport.
Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is Canada's ninth busiest airport and was named the world's best airport with under 5 million passengers by the 2013 Skytrax World Airport Awards. Billy Bishop generates $1.9 billion in annual economic output and 5,700 jobs for the Greater Toronto Area.
