I was asked to film a promo for Essance, a dance music night in Birmingham. Aiming to promote the event we filmed this short video over one evening at Air in Birmingham. It was dark, hot but really enjoyable!
Filmed on Canon & Panasonic cameras and edited with Final Cut Pro X
This short sample of a film I am putting together shows the first real test I have completed with the new Sony PXW FS7 in such low light conditions. These particular clips are all shot at 180FPS in 1080P then conformed to a 24p timeline.
To film at such high speeds and in such low light was a challenge even with an f1 lens. When shooting normal 24p footage I was using either 2000 ISO or 4000 ISO just to gain the correct exposure so I really had to push things for the high frame rate clips. Another unexpected issue was after I had imported the clips in to FCPx I applied the Sony Slog3 log settings to the clips but because the dynamic range was so great in the night club the LUT immediately clipped a lot of the highlight information so I had to resort to grading the clips by hand.
As part of the finishing I applied Neat image to all of the clips and made a custom profile and then applied that to the clips. This gave a very nice clean image but, to me, it didn't look right so I overlaid a 4K film scan, set the blend mode to overlay and reduced the opacity to 50% to bring some texture back to the shots.
I have uploaded the film in Prores LT to try and minimise the compression but even this isn't enough and the video here looks a lot softer with less detail than the original footage.
Camera - Sony PXW-S7
Lenses - Samyang 35mm, 85mm T1.5, Canon 50mm f1.4 all EF mount via Metabones Speedbooster (rendering all lenses f1 equivalent)

Clubbing film shot during the final Tidy Weekender in Souhtport, UK in March 2015.
We were invited along to record the last ever weekender in Southport UK. Held over three days in a holiday camp, clubbers from all over the UK and some from other countries descended on this small beach side resort for a weekend of hard dance music.
Shot on a Sony PXW-FS7 and edited in FCPx and graded with colour finale.
