While researching an appropriate location for the atmosphere that we wanted to create in our opening sequence, we came across an abandoned village that seemed to be the perfect fit. Although the Bangour Village Hospital was remote and quite far away from Edinburgh City we still decided to explore it. Initially we had doubts about the permission for the recording at the location, but eventually we managed to get permission from the responsible authorities. It took us one day to acquire all of the necessary footage which shows that the plans and organising that we had made in advance proved to be successful.
Although we had all of the required equipment to capture the footage we weren’t prepared for the change of weather conditions.
DIRECTING & EDITING
First of all, it was challenging to create an opening sequence of three minutes that incorporates a complex narrative. We are introducing the audience to a high amount of information which is supposed to act as a foundation for the story. At the same time our aim was to leave it to the imagination of the audience. For this project we decided to use a nonlinear narration and flashbacks which are typical for the directing style of Christopher Nolan.
The nonlinear plot/story and the flashback features are supported by showing alternating time spans and disconnected realities. We have tried to support this in both the shooting and editing process.
We have spent a considerable amount of time color grading our footage. The predominant color grading palette that is used in the opening sequence and which is typical for David Fincher’s style are blue, green and orange. It helped us to create the mood and the emotion of our scenes. Furthermore it supported our narrative by making it easier for the audience to distinguish what's happening and how the story progresses.
Regarding the music for this project, the aim was to capture an eerie and unsettling tone and incorporate it into the theme. We first needed a song for inspiration and we agreed with going for a genre that was prominent with bass and kind of industrial which we felt gave the right impression we wanted for the opening titles. To create the actual music, we were initially going to record live guitar as at least one of our team members already had experience with that, however, we ended up using a midi keyboard as not only would the sound be more appropriate
but it gave us more versatility in the writing and recording stage. A bassheavy riff was composed that allowed dark sounding chords to support the music underneath. This was dropped in pitch by an octave to achieve the deep level of sound we were looking for. Finally, ambience was added to give a disorientated feel along with bell tolls and thunder claps to reinforce the tension.

This project will be the opening four minutes of a TV Series. The genre it will fit is the mystery and horror while also feeling post-apocalyptic. This is the most suitable route to take in which we want to convey our story which also keeps in the style of the directors Christopher Nolan and David Fincher who we chose to influence our project. The concept is to create an unsettling but interesting storyline and setting that grips the audience into wanting to watch more and be emotionally invested in the characters.
The idea of the opening sequence is two people who are researching and have decided to travel to an isolated place that seemingly has no inhabitants. They are subjected to strange visions and suffer from amnesia. The story deals with the turmoil of becoming separated from someone in a seemingly haunted or paranormal environment which allows for the emotion and characters to be developed within a short time frame.
The plot centres around two characters, Natali and Andrew, who are researching Bangour Village, a place believed to be conducting inhuman experiments on people some decades ago. Shortly after locating the village and arriving there, they decide that it would be best to separate in order to find what they are looking for. Some time later, both characters suffer amnesia and lose consciousness. Eventually Natali wakes up and phones Andrew telling him that they should meet outside the church. The female character makes her way towards the church where she has flashbacks of the events leading up to her amnesia. When she arrives at the church, she finds that Andrew is nowhere to be seen and shouts for him. Finally, Andrew is seen waking up leaving the story open to the audience’s interpretation.
The characters include a female and male character. Both Natali and Andrew are researchers who seem to specialise in paranormal locations. They seem to be determined in their personalities and share the same goal regarding their research. Natali makes most of the decisions within the pair but there is no apparent conflict between the two. Both of them are susceptible to the supernatural characteristics of the location they visit, though Natali seems to have a better resilience.
