Ironically truer words were never spoken when General Hospital's Luke Spencer uttered, "Dying is easy, it's living that's the hard part." As we search for the missing part of ourselves, parts that remember a more peaceful and loving place we cling to each other like magnates in a blank field of space. At times the gravitational pull, pulls us in so close life begins to spiral out of control. What makes us want? More importantly what makes us need to feel love of the world around us? Is it that the thought or remembrance of a greater existence makes us latch on to a loving face, cuddly dog or fancy car in our search for this unobtainable happiness?
The most extraordinary force in the universe is love. That being said, love also comes with dire consequences. Love has the ability to turn a frown into a smile. "Love lifts us up where we belong," "Love is a many splendid thing" and "All you need is love." But if love is capable of infinite happiness why is it that she also has the ability to wear us down so easily.
From the day we are born until the moment we die we begin adding personal items, mostly stemming from love or lack of and place them into our own custom handmade Louie Vuitton, Prada and Channel luggage. A mother mourning the loss of a child, places his favorite toy into her suitcase. A toddler places an empty wine bottle into his backpack as he watches his father beat his mother while a teenage girl hides hustler magazines. Throughout our lives we add and add with out ever lighting the load. We walk side-by-side, hand in hand, husband and wife, neighbors and enemies rudely bumping each other. What would happen if we learned to let go? Letting go would be the thing capable of saving us all.
As the characters of The Call pack their suitcases, they place items from their favorite memories, weddings, birthdays, just because days and secure them safely next to their fears. As family members hold hands walking down long white corridors hauling their luggage, co-workers join in walking down streets and alleys with Loraine leading the way. Continuing on their journey past and present callers walk with their luggage through a cemetery. As they get to a green field the cast begins to empty their luggage. To their surprise the items they have placed in their luggage have disappeared and in return they begin emptying hundreds of butterflies on to the green pasture. As we follow one butterfly he flies past a man standing on the edge and the man has a sudden change of heart after realizing the beauty of the world.
We may not be ready to let go of our bags; we realize we were not fully prepared when we acquired our wonderful gifts. But letting go and moving foreword maybe the only way we can save someone and only then will we be ready to answer The Call.
