David B. Smith Gallery and artist Gregory Euclide are very pleased to announce the release of a series of limited edition prints,
which document temporary paintings Euclide made with Sumi ink on dry erase board.
Euclide teaches high school in Minnesota and, during his twenty-five minute lunch period, began creating temporary paintings within that short allotted timeframe as a demonstration to his students and a challenge to himself.
David B. Smith Gallery is releasing Laid Down & Wiped Away—a special edition of ten portfolios of original artwork and prints further exploring Euclide’s experiments on his classroom whiteboard. Each portfolio contains eight pigment prints numbered and signed by the artist, mounted on 4-ply museum mat board, and measuring 16 x 20 inches. A pair of white museum gloves and a certificate of authenticity are included with each portfolio, as well as an original drawing by Gregory Euclide. inted on archival Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper, and measure 16 x 20 inches.

The Capture series, first introduced in this exhibition, references Robert Smithson and the tradition of landscape architecture started in America by Fredrick Law Olmsted. Smithson created works of land art where he poured glue on the surface of the earth. Olmstead completely fabricated the pastoral, picturesque, and formal landscapes of New York City’s Central Park from an inhospitable swamp.
Euclide takes paint and pours it on the land, capturing the local flora and terrain in the paint. On top of the paint, Euclide builds a diorama, depicting the concept of the idealized landscape framework. What the viewer sees in these pieces is more than any one concept—it is the interaction and interconnection between the actual land, the cultural idealization of the landscape, and the art-making process itself. Through this tension, these pieces address the issues of regeneration, recycling, growth and decay, the synthetic and the organic, and the very cycles driven by nature
