1. I didn't know how much we owe to horseshoe crabs until I went out with researchers who are counting the crabs along the Connecticut shoreline. Virtually every vaccine and medical device is test for contamination using a substance extracted from horsehoe crab blood. These creatures have survived five mass extinctions, but now finally their numbers are crashing.

  2. Dr. John Tanacredi has been studying horseshoe crabs (Limulus polyphemus) for decades. Though they aren't experiencing a precipitous decline in population numbers, they have fallen by about 10% in the last 10 years, he says. He's starting a breeding program in West Sayville, N.Y., once home to the Blue Points oyster business.

  3. A great example of the interdependency of species. After realizing that a decline in the horseshoe crab population had a corresponding effect on that of shorebirds, scientists and volunteers now monitor the crabs in the Delaware Bay. They hope to see a rebound in the birds' populations, especially the red knot, some of which migrate from Tierra del Fuego all the way to the Arctic Circle, and are particularly reliant on horseshoe crab eggs found in the Delaware Bay to power their migration. 4. Astrobiology is the study of life in space and on other planets. An important component of such research is sterility. No only do astrobiologists try avoid contaminating other planets with life from Earth, but they also want to protect our planet from potentially harmful organisms that may hitch a ride on returning spacecraft.

Building and maintaining a sterile vehicle is no easy task! Thankfully and with a little help from Nature, we have ways to make the process go a little more smoothly.

In this video, astrobiologist Norman Wainwright describes how we use the remarkable immune response of horseshoe crabs in our effort to preserve planetary ecosystems.
