1. In the film “Reunion,” Liz Freese- Cabrera explores the mystery surrounding her great-grandfather’s disappearance. Shigeo “Benito” Naito, a Japanese immigrant to Mexico, vanished around the time of the bombing of Pearl Harbor from Maneadero, a small town in Baja California, leaving behind his family and a successful business. Elizabeth interviews family members and regional historians, each of who has a unique perspective on Benito’s story. She discovers that her family’s long-held belief about Benito’s fate is a case of mistaken identity, so she must expand her search outside the realm of family and local lore. She resolves to understand her history through her own lens: a combination of interviews and multimedia reflections on her own cultural identity.

Production for “Reunion,” Liz’s first documentary, started in March 2008. It was filmed in Baja California, San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco. She is currently applying for post-production funding and also hopes to continue documenting her family’s story.

What is a moment made of? When you close your eyes and think about another time or place, do you feel that within that moment, you have traveled through time? How do even you define time? In this exhibition we’ll look at different facets of time; discrete experiences that can be frozen and then distilled, as well as elastic journeys that stretch our interpretations of the present.

This is a group show featuring photographer Christopher Fuzi, painter Lethea Warren, and multimedia artist Treat U Nice. During our opening on Friday, Feb. 1, we’ll feature a performance by MeaningLess Emphasis.

    Opens Friday, February 1.
The gallery will be open from 6-11 pm as part of the Oakland Art Murmur First Friday event
Classic Cars West Gallery, 411 26th Street, Oakland
The show will remain open through March 30, 2013.
