This documentary was produced by Ya'axché Conservation Trust and Ajax Films in the Toledo District of southern Belize to highlight the connections between freshwater and marine ecosystems. It was the result of a collaboration between a variety of NGO's and dynamic individuals, particularly LightHawk who provided flights over the watersheds and coastal reefs, Toledo Institute for Development and the Environment (TIDE) for their expertise in watershed management, Rachael Carrie for her innovative work on community based freshwater monitoring, Mauricio Mejia at WWF for his work with commercial plantations and Zenovia and Ignacio Ash for their important work building awareness of the importance of healthy rivers in their community.
One of the key messages of this film is that what happens upstream affects what happens downstream and it is for this reason that we must learn to take care of our rivers for ourselves and for future generations.
This film provides a chance to see how a small number of individuals living along Toledo's rivers are trying to make a big difference within their communities providing not just local benefits but benefits for all Belizean's.
You can see interviews with representatives from inland Mayan communities, coastal creole communities and a variety of conservation organizations who are working together to build awareness of the importance of watershed health.
This film is being shown throughout Belize on local and national television and particularly to communities and schools in the Toledo district who have no access to electricity or television.

Girl in Progress is a terrific heart-warming family film starring the critically acclaimed actress Eva Mendes and introducing new rising star, Cierra Ramirez. This touching film takes an honest look at issues we all face: dealing with difficult relationships, feeling utterly alone, making the right choice in friendships, and trying to grow up in the middle of it all.
The movie tells the story of a young girl, Ansiedad, who wants to skip adolescence and move straight into adulthood. But her quest is really a desperate cry for her mother’s attention. When Ansiedad’s English teacher, Ms. Armstrong (Patricia Arquette) introduces the class to classic coming-of-age stories, Ansiedad hatches a plan to propel herself past adolescence and into adulthood. Her best friend Tavita (Disney star Raini Rodriguez) goes along with the plan until it begins to unravel and Tavita finds that not only is Ansiedad leaving her adolescence behind, but she is also leaving her behind.
Ansiedad’s mother (Eva Mendez) is too preoccupied with work and her dating Dr. Hartford (Matthew Modine) to see what is happening. Neither is she prepared to cope with the issues Ansiedad is struggling with. In the middle of it all, Grace’s co-worker (Eugenio Derbez) tries to win over the affections of Grace. As all these relationships with their hopes and dreams collide, Girl in Progress takes you on a ride that will tug at your heart and leave you feeling inspired as the characters learn how to overcome difficult family situations and grow in a way that enables them learn from past mistakes so that they don’t need to be repeated.
It is a beautiful story about real issues faced by teens and parents today and offers hope and wisdom for dealing with those issues.
Girl in Progress opens in theaters nationwide May 11. It is an inspiring film that reminds us to enjoy life in the moment, cherish our families, not take for granted what is right in front of us, and that sometimes growing-up means acting your age. Lessons we all need to remember from time to time.
