1. A digital film by Geoffrey Weary

CAPTIVE explores the themes of repression, confinement and escape. These themes are expressed through the incorporation of grainy VHS footage shot in Berlin at the time of the collapse of the Berlin Wall, hand-held camera sequences shot in a maze-like forest and slices of footage composited out of archival Cold War films. As the real historical Wall crumbles under the blows of street hawkers and souvenir hunters, ghostly specters from the past appear then dissolve back into the scratchy surface of a long forgotten newsreel.

  4. Saturday 2nd February - Sunday 23rd June

Shaun Gladwell's solo exhibition Cycles of Radical Will is the Australian artist's largest in the UK to date.

The exhibition embraces flux and transformation, reflecting the changing seasons during the exhibition. Over the course of five months, works are exchanged to offer a sequence of windows into Gladwell’s artistic practice, unconstrained by the limitations of a single exhibition project.

For Cycles of Radical Will, Gladwell speculates on the creative conflict within various cultural practices and traditions. These conflicts take the form of 'battles' – between beat-boxers and urban dancers, skateboarders and BMX riders, and (Mod) scooter enthusiasts and (Rocker) motorcycle riders – and ultimately between the extreme sports athlete and gravity itself. Tension between these opposing and often complementary practices is the force that drives groups towards innovation or oblivion.

    Admission is free.

  5. The work visualises the gallery as a site of disease and sickness - as malignant tumours and other diseased bodily matter appear within the space of the gallery

There is also another link between disease and the art world: the idea of museums as sterile and antiseptic spaces and the very notion of the curator to ‘cure’ the diseases of a sick and maladjusted world.

The work too extends the idea of how the media sphere is increasingly thought of as part of our of bodies, mobile phones, the internet and social media as new outgrowths of our biology.
