We spent 9 days in Domincan Republic with Ian Balding (ianbalding.com), Jarrod Covington (wrightsvillesup.com) and Ben Bourgeois. Ben has a surf hut on the north coast aptly named 'The DR Surf Hut' (mulcoytravel.com) where he hosts surf adventures catered to the all around waterman. From Kite, surf and stand up paddling to hiking, diving and cliff jumping there are endless activities for any water adventure.
We had some moderate surf to work with in a few locations around the hut; mostly in the chest to head high range. All the breaks we surfed and SUPed were mostly reef bottom and a little fickle. The swell and winds were uncharacteristically out of the north so finding great spots was a daily challenge. Even still, there wasn't a shortage of activities; with SUPs in tow we were able to paddle long winding rivers through the Dominican country side out into the ocean and along the coast.
Ian Balding is an east coast board builder with a broad spectrum talent for shaping and a sense for great adventure. He wanted to get his equipment in the tropical waters of the DR north coast. With talented surfers SUPers and kiters Jarrod Covington and Ben Bourgeois we set to get video and photos of his beautiful surf creations in action. This short video was shot using Canon EOS 1d Mark iv, 50mm 1.4, 100-400mm f/4.5, 16-35mm f/2.8. Water shots were shot using GoPro Hero 3. Additional footage was provided by Benny B shot on a GoPro Hero.
As the competition winds down there was one final day of wind left in the forecast; and it was blowing. We started the day with the final heats of the men's slicks portion and then moved to the surf kicker portion. This was the first year under the new surf format and the conditions were ideal - high winds and heavy surf. Here is a video glimpse at the day's events. Thanks for following our video coverage of the 2014 Venyu Triple S Invitational!
