One of the most important elements in an artists life is frittering, or dithering, trifling or procrastinating. This is thinking time. Its the same as tidying the house rather than actually doing the task you set out to do. However, this time is not totally wasted. This is subtle thinking time, ideas can arise from dawdling as the artist bumps into things they may have forgotten laying around their studio or work space. Ideas that previously fluttered past the conscious while very busy, like a wild bird, are remembered in the peace and quiet of ones own frittering. Often, this is a time of relaxation for the artist. A time to clean the nest and prepare it for the next impassioned flurry of creative output, feathers and pepper filling the atmosphere as an idea comes to fruition in the special moments of idea manifestation, when ideas are born, fledglings at first, but they will be nurtured and fed worms of contemplation, contemplation had in the quite moments of frittering away time.
I was lucky enough, some time ago, to capture on video, G frittering in his studio. Below you can be a fly on the wall and witness, most probably for the first time in artistic history, the private act of procrastination and dither.
