The unique headline font of ethical clothing company howies has sustainability at its core, beginning life
as a Welsh chestnut tree far removed from the technology of the web.

Sourced in Wales, the home of howies, we found a woodworker and a wind-fallen chestnut tree. Once the wood was carved from the letters we designed, each was burnished and repeatedly wire brushed to enhance the grain. Printed using a mix of ink and turpentine we then scanned, flipped, adjusted and digitised the finished font ready for web use: a fusion of traditional craft skills with up to date technology.

Oh, and why Castan? It’s Welsh for Chestnut.
