1. November 18, 2013 was a phenomenal day for wildlife photography in Santa Cruz. All month long the unprecedented anchovy run has brought zillions of birds, dolphin, seals, sea lions, and whales. This particular evening, the tide was exceptionally low at sunset, which exposed the reef at the famous Pleasure Point surf area. I had just assembled my first drone, the DJI Phantom, and was eager to try it out. When I saw the conditions at the Point, I quickly calibrated the aircraft and ran out to do my maiden flight. I am standing in the soggy seaweed, transmitter in hand, as the quad copter sweeps over flocks of birds. The light is magical, reflecting purples off the surface of the water.
