When Winter Storm Dion swept across the country, forecasters predicted five inches of snow and the federal government shut down to keep idiots off the road during rush hour. This is the time lapse video from our deck of the snowstorm across DC on December 10, 2013.

Winter storm "Hercules" -- the first snow of 2014 in the northeast -- started with rain before turning to snow and ice across the region around Washington, DC. It gave us a couple of inches of snow, some spectacular skies, and perfect weather for Labrador Retrievers -- like Murphy the Big Giant Dog.

Fog and rain sweep across the Anacostia River at the Washington Navy Yard, shrouding the Display Ship Barry. This is "lake effect fog" -- humid air passing over the frozen Anacostia River ahead of a warm downpour. Pretty rare in DC. The fog swells up off the ice, envelops the ship and Navy Yard neighborhood before a chilly rain washes the fog away. Watch the video. The effect is a lot cooler than the explanation.
