  2. About Higher Achievement and the Literary Love Poetry Performance

Higher Achievement’s rigorous afterschool and summer academic program closes the opportunity gap for middle school youth in underserved communities. The program’s proven model provides a rigorous year-round learning environment, caring role models, and a culture of high expectations, resulting in college-bound scholars with the character, confidence, and skills to succeed. On average, 96 percent of Higher Achievement scholars who complete the program advance to top academic high schools, and 93 percent advance to college. Higher Achievement was founded in Washington, DC in 1975 and currently operates Achievement Centers in Washington, DC; Alexandria, VA; Baltimore, MD; Pittsburgh, PA, and Richmond, VA.

The annual Literary Love Poetry Performance is one of Higher Achievement’s most beloved and honored traditions. After months of preparation working with their mentors at Center, scholars are finally ready to take the stage and share their original poems. In order to prepare, Higher Achievement scholars study the writings of well-known authors, such as Geoffrey Chaucer, Pablo Neruda, and Walt Whitman. They learn to write their own poems after studying and practicing language styles, literary devices, and poetic structures.

Selected finalists from each of our six Achievement Centers made their way to the regional stage after performing their poems in front of their Center communities and answering questions from a panel of judges. This year, scholars will be sharing the stage with Higher Achievement alumni performing original poems written for the occasion. We’re grateful for your attendance and support as we celebrate the achievements of our scholars and alumni.
