  4. Once you see Assisi you can see Basilica di San Francesco lying on the top of a hill.

St. Francis lies buried in this Basilica.

He had instructed his followers to bury him in the most dismal place in town.

This hill was called the Hell hill because of the executions that took place.

Since St. Francis is buried here the hill is called the Paradise Hill.

On July 16, 1228 Francis was canonized by Pope Gregory IX. The next day, the pope himself laid the foundation stone of the basilica.

The basilica has a lower church and a above church.

In the lower church is the remains of St. Francis in a tomb. And you can also see a number of garments and other relics of him.

The upper church has a beautiful facade made of white stone in Gothic style. The windows are decorated with artistic stained-glass windows.

All walls are covered with frescoes `s. There are scenes from the Old and New Testaments. There is quite a lot to see.

If you are on the platform of the upper church you have a panoramic view over the Tuscan landscape and you can also see the Basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli kie in the valley.
