1. When there is an 'open' casting call that means anyone can go and audition, but usually, as in this case, there are separate times for Union and Non-Union actors. This video shows you the Non-Union people interested in being Background Actors (aka 'Extras') for the new television series "Gotham" airing on FOX in Autumn 2014. Most people chosen will be background actors simply walking around in the scene, acting natural while some will have more featured roles or may even get speaking parts.

You never know on a television or movie set. You might show up in the morning as an extra and end up getting promoted to a higher pay grade and role because they need someone who looks, walks, and talks like you for a sudden idea the director has or because some dummy didn't show up.

One key thing to know when you go to a casting call is though, dress for success. It's OK to wear just about anything, but have in mind that your look is your brand and could determine what role you get or if you get a part at all. Stick to the basics, the classics, and no sports clothing. You can dress casually, but dress to make a good impression. Also realize they are probably going to take your photo, even if you bring a professional headshot.

  2. Most of the actors in your favorite films and television shows are Background Actors (aka 'Extras'), and many of your favorite stars started out as Background Actors including Brad Pitt, Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone, and Matt Damon.

While Background Actors don't have any lines, these professionals, working on the National Geographic Channel series Brain Games have some good tips about this type of work.

Note that this was shot while the Actors were in 'Holding,' edited the same day, and uploaded to Vimeo to meet a deadline for the Weekend Challenge--though well past midnight due to technical issues.

Actors names will be added later as they become available.

  3. I wanted to capture this feeling before it escaped me, so after parking my car, before I brought all the groceries and such inside, I set up my camera and took this short. This is my first 'Vlog.'

The news is that I went to an audition for the reality show Brain Games on the National Geographic Channel, and heard back within the week that I got the part--a paying, professional acting gig.

While I was at it, I created a three second intro which I can use on all future videos. The background photo is one I shot in October 2013 of the Triborough (RFK) Bridge from Astoria Park in Queens, looking towards Manhattan. I recorded the music in Garage Band on my iPad.
