Welcome to Our Gator Lagoon at The Original Crab Shack on Tybee Island, Georgia! Home to 78 live baby alligators, our Gator Lagoon now features a Gator Walk and Talk Show. A fun, free and interactive program bringing you up close and personal with one of mankind’s most ferocious predators.
Join local Gator expert Todd “Fish” Holland for a guided tour of our gator lagoon while you learn all kinds of interesting facts about the American Alligator. Did you know that the earliest fossil records for the alligator are over 200 million years old? Alligators grow at the rate of one foot per year and the largest gator on record was over 19 feet long and was captured in 1890! Be sure to take a picture with our life size replica of this alligator that’s waiting to greet you at the entrance of our gator lagoon.
You’ll also learn how to tell the difference between an alligator and a crocodile, why alligators don’t eat during the winter time and why they have a four chambered heart. Did you know that alligators can sustain life under water for up to five hours and although attacks on humans are rare they are not unheard of. So if you choose to feed an alligator at our Gator Lagoon, be careful and don’t lean over the edge!
All of the alligators at The Crab Shack are “Farmed Alligators,” that were brought to our Gator Lagoon directly from a farm in Florida. When the gators in our lagoon grow to a certain size, they are relocated to other exhibits around the country where they are able to live out the rest of their lives unharmed. So come on out to The Crab Shack and have fun feeding the alligators in our Gator Lagoon, but be sure never to feed alligators in the wild as it is illegal and extremely dangerous!
Girl scout troops, tour buses and large groups are always welcome to enjoy this one-of-a-kind family friendly experience that is perfect for all ages! Be sure to check out our website: thecrabshack.com, for all Gator Walk & Talk show times. Only at The "Original" "World Famous" Crab Shack on Tybee Island, Georgia.
