In Spring 2011, I took an experimental class at UW–Madison titled "Projects in Virtual Reality". Working in a team of four students, together we created the Galaxy Map: an immersive space exploration experience.
The project is virtual environment developed for the C6 CAVE in the Living Environments Laboratory (discovery.wisc.edu/lel/), part of the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery (discovery.wisc.edu/) at UW–Madison (wisc.edu/). The Galaxy Map lets users zoom in and out of clusters, solar systems, and planets using the CAVE's wand pointing device. In addition to beautiful interstellar visuals, the project features a dynamic soundtrack that changes composition as the user zooms in and out of different celestial bodies.
