My Dad's (Jay Beeler) Early Work in Knoxville Television

From the Jay Beeler Collection at TAMIS!

Ace news reporter and long-time WBIR-TV personality Jay Beeler managed to capture the 1963 Riviera Theatre
fire on Gay Street in Knoxville with his trusty 8mm home movie camera as it happened! The late Mr. Beeler filmed several historic news events over the years, and his amazing film collection has just been preserved at the TAMIS archive, thanks to his daughter Kristi Beeler.

Note: Then playing was the classic film "Jason and the Argonauts", then a first-run feature!

+ More

My dad was Jay Beeler who worked for WKGN Radio, WBIR Radio and Television during the early 1960's through 1976. He went on to be Assistant Chief of the Knox County Fire Department where all of his crew said he always had a camera in hand even while working as a fireman. He started his own video production company called Jay Beeler Productions in the early 1980's until about 1990. He then went to work as the Manager over the Video Production Department for the Department of Energy in Oak Ridge, TN. Later in life he worked as a producer, videographer, and editor for Gospel Music Television and a Closed-Captioner for Jewelry Television. Many people know him from his news days but dad was also a very talented singer and pianist who won many awards, sang at the request of many church's concerts, and had a standing gig in the piano bar at the Holiday Inn on the corner of Chapman Highway and Kay Street in South Knoxville until they tore it down to add on to the Baptist Hospital. Daddy always dreamed of making it big using his talents and even auditioned for the Lawrence Welk Show once. My family says that momma was pregnant with me and he did not accept that job because of it but I cannot verify or deny that information as fact or fiction. Anyway, as find pictures and video footage, I will add it to this channel that is dedicated to my Daddy.
