  3. This is a short movie analysing an aspect of the underground network of Sydney CBD.
I chose to take all the exits I could find linking Town Hall to Martin Place plus a couple of extras showing the porosity of Sydney.
Similarly to cities such as Helsinki, Toronto, Minneapolis, yet with a very different reason; not climatic but purely due to a sudden urban sprawl and dentrification.

Contrary to the traditional narratives of case-study-houses-like modernism, surf, barbeques and outdoors good-life, Sydney is a city of interiors. Fluorescent-lit storefronts escorting endless well-tempered corridors, never-ending sprawling underground networks mixing shopping malls and cultural institutions, glass-cladded pedestrian bridges and 1970s golden-anodised-aluminium-renovated train stations connecting 19th Century heritage buildings and corporate atriums, seamlessness concatenation of escalators, tunnels and CCTV-controlled atmospheres… Enter them in the vicinity of City Hall station, leave on the other side of Pitt Street Mall. Find an entrance at the bottom-end of Surry Hills and resurface in Ultimo.

Sydney’s vernacular interior urbanism has not been explored, conceptualized or designed, yet. We will do it. In an attempt to complete the massive volume Public Sydney and expand its definition of public space grounded in 19th century notions of civil society and 16th century drawing techniques, the studio will document, theorize and question the future of Sydney’s ever-growing interior city, as a campus.
