Covered explores the word of heavily tattooed women and female tattoo artists in the United States. Within the last decade, tattoos have exploded in popularity, becoming a common body modification practice. Once only a man's domain, women now comprise fifty percent of all tattoo customers, and are becoming tattoo artists in larger numbers. Covered takes a larger, sociological perspective on what it means to be a heavily tattooed woman in today's society--from the perspective of the women themselves. Covered presents the ways in which everyday heavily tattooed women must navigate social sanctions from strangers, family, friends, and employers, in order to enjoy their love of tattoo artwork. Covered is a feature length documentary and features dozens of tattoo artists, including: Vyvyn Lazonga, Lyle Tuttle, Patty Kelley, Kari Barba, and Sofia Estrella (formerly Ms. Deborah).
Mo Coppoletta assumed the role of curator in Ryan Hope’s new documentary, ‘Skin’.
The documentary formed part of a project involving 5 collectors who accuire tattoos designed by Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Raymond Pettibon, Jake and Dinos Chapman, and Richard Prince. The project was commissioned by Dasha Zhukova’s Garage magazine as part of a shoot by Hedi Slimane.
