1. John’s wife Jan passed away last year. John has been distraught and has not been himself since. This documentary traces the love that one person can have for another – even after death.

I had the honour and pleasure of working for the Bayside Film Festival in 2013 as a mentor in the Youth Documentary Project. For three months I visited Dandenong High School‘s year ten media class and helped the students create documentaries about issues that fascinated them in their community. The resulting films screened at the Bayside Film Festival at the Brighton Bay Cinema in August 2013.

Despite being stuck with me as their mentor, Hadi Shafie, Tysheen Chand, Dylan David and Mohammed Albadri managed to win Best Film in Competition with their documentary “John and Jan’s Mess”. The film is a poignant portrait of love and grief made all the more remarkable by the fact that this is the first film made by these amazingly talented young filmmakers.

I hope to be as successful as them one day.
