Following on from his successful and highly awarded web video series and online project, JOSH’S HOUSE, Gardening Australia TV presenter and sustainability expert Josh Byrne presents a groundbreaking new series:

With support from the CRC for Low Carbon Living Josh is embarking upon a unique national research tour that will bring together the best high performance volume market housing projects from around the country for the very first time and presenting it in a six part web video and multi media series that debuts on the 31st October at

‘Through my experiences and research over the years, I have developed a strong belief that there is a better way we can be designing and building our homes for the benefit of our health, hip pockets and our future. I want to see what’s possible for the future of housing in Australia and encourage that conversation across the country. At the completion of this series I am going to take what I find to Canberra to continue the knowledge sharing and express public views and ideas that I find along the way.’
Josh Byrne.

Like the initial Josh’s House series that followed the design and build of Josh’s own high performance home, this series will be completely open source with plans, fact sheets, videos and heaps more being made available for free via You can also follow the series via Josh’s House social media pages.

We all think about the performance of our vehicles and maintain them to ensure they are running well and not wasting money but we don’t often have a conversation around the performance of our homes. Simple design principles and behaviours can dramatically impact the efficiency of our homes and literally save us thousands each year not to mention the benefit for the environment and our health and happiness. These high performance homes will prove through state of the art data collection and monitoring that there is a better way we can be designing and building our homes in all of Australia’s climate regions.

Josh’s tour will take him to the very best high performance volume market housing projects around the country that have been built to demonstrate design principles, explore ideas and gain valuable knowledge. On approaching the series Josh insisted that in order to be a STAR PERFORMER each home had to be; affordable and achievable for the mainstream market and collect data in order to prove that they operate at a level beyond that of standard homes and even typical eco-homes. In doing this, the series is able to bring together for the first time the projects that provide the best key principles and ideas that we can all utilise right across Australia thus increasing our knowledge in terms of real change in the new housing market.

The tour kicks off in Melbourne, by visiting Australia’s first Zero Emission House designed for the volume market.

Josh then heads to Sydney to see a life size research project that is putting the design, materials and construction methods through rigorous assessment.

Next Josh heads to northern Queensland to meet a second-generation builder and his family, just as they’ve moved into their new 10 Star home.

Then it’s off to Karratha in the North West of WA to see a new style of housing that’s challenging the status quo in one of the toughest building markets in the country.

Josh’s tour concludes in Adelaide where he visits a housing development based on high performance design guidelines to see the result of these concepts when rolled out at scale.

To top it all off Josh will travel to Canberra to present his findings.
