1. In 1914, construction began on the Columbia River Highway, the first scenic highway in the United States, constructed specifically so that tourists could view the Columbia River Gorge. Sam Hill, together with his engineer Sam Lancaster, wanted to build a road so that people could view the scenery from their new automobiles. The road was built so that no grade exceeded 5%, the limit for a Model T. Sam Hill was a visionary and had built his reputation in railroads, telephones, and in "the Good Roads Society", an early model of road building that became the standard for new roads in the United States.

Currently the "King of Roads" is being restored, so that one will be able to ride a bike or walk from Portland in the west to The Dalles in the east without having to use Interstate 84. The Centennial of the completion of the highway will mark the opening of the final restoration efforts . The celebration is scheduled for June 2016.

The producers of this video hope to raise funds to complete a more in-depth documentary of the highway, for release in conjunction with the highway's Centennial.
