Prologue is a videotape that explores the connections between writing and filmmaking. Specifically, this work refers to the way in which a prologue shapes understandings of the text that follows it. As the first in a series of three works that experiment with the connections and differences between literary works and works which employ moving images, this tape is a prologue. In itself, it sets a pace and has a rhythm that borrows from dreams, memories and the emergence of things felt.
I have always felt close to the work that writers, especially poets, do. In 1990 I accepted a proposal from the Italian writer Giuliano Compagno to produce a videotape from one of his books. “Generazione zero” (Generation zero) borrows its narrative structure from Compagno’s book and visually develops the space that is created in the experience of reading. It is this space that interests me most and that I want to further explore. Considering the overload of images which surrounds us there remains and important need to find and explore those spaces created by open ended images. My work is intended to prompt the viewer to interpret and imagine.

In the aftermath of Italy’s troubled ‘70s, two former right-wing terrorists - one now a professor, the other still in hiding – look for each other. They are part of a generation that, independently from which side they took at the time, or what was their degree of involvement in the political fight, is looking back and thinking.
“Generazione Zero” (Generation Zero) was commissioned by writer Giuliano Compagno for the presentation of the omonimous book. The novel is a mosaic of narration and thoughts constructed in aphorisms. The video follows the mosaic structure. Elements of the original narration build a miltilayered visual space: it reconstructs for the viewer the emotional space of reading. All the text written and spoken in the video is quoted from the book.
