In 1918, the railroad companies oversaw a major manipulation of the Turkey Creek watershed. In order to open up the central valley of the city for the rapid acceleration of industrial and rail industry, a large tunnel was excavated that diverts Turkey Creek into the Kansas River. The resulting canyon forces the river to turn sharply and descend down a waterfall and into the diversion tunnel. In the early 60's the interstate highway was built above the diversion canyon, and the housing in the area was removed. Recently this canyon was blanketed in fresh, grey spray-on concrete, lending the entire area the appearance of an alien world. The entire environment feels strange an unnatural; even the scent of the water is pungent with suburban runoff. Being inevitably informed by the phenomenal presence and traumatic ecological specter of this location, Quadrigarum worked responsively, conjuring up a sound cape that pays homage to the violent persistence of water and humbly mourns the discordance of the automotive and industrial implements that now dominate the landscape. The imagery of flares and high-visibilty clothing suggests a call for help, distress, and loss or being lost. It also highlights the invisibility of the location.
