1. Episode 6 of The Penny Jam finds the Ascetic Junkies performing "Gone Shootin" under the St. Johns Bridge in North Portland. The band is relatively new to the Portland area but they bring an impressive catalog of songs. This set includes only 3/5 of the band - in a typical performance setting there is also a drummer and bass player. While the scene looks sunny, the weather changed every few minutes, including bouts of rain and hail.

  2. Episode 5 of The Penny Jam features "Call Me," an unreleased song by the Morals. Filmed at the Bipartisan Cafe on 79th and Stark, a spacious, authentic haunt deep in Southeast with some of the best pie known to Portland. The owner allowed us to film on short notice and we set up shop around sundown, confusing a small group of cafe dwellers by recording the same track 4 times. Here is the best cut.

  3. Magic Johnson brings their brand of Spanish punk to the brightly lit and fantastically toy-filled Dollar Scholar on 33rd and Hawthorne. A small crowd of supporters came to watch the band and the regular customers browsed the goods between takes. Scott, the owner, didn't seem phased at all about letting us set up during open hours, for which he deserves a tip of the hat. For more information visit thepennyjam.com

  4. Episode 3 of The Penny Jam features 2 songs, an original, "Stalker Girl" and a cover of Social Distortion song "Ball and Chain." Chris Boone has been playing music all across the country for more than 20 years and his current lineup is a product of Portland. This episode was filmed at Loprinzi's Gym on 41st and Division, which has a classic charm you don't see in most health clubs. The owner Bob Hill, gave us free run of the place for a couple hours and despite some concerns, the acoustics of the place were actually pretty good. For more information visit thepennyjam.com

  5. Episode 2 of The Penny Jam features "Tried so Hard" by a band of siblings going by the name "The Good Ship Astoria." Not coincidentally, they are all from the small Oregon town of Astoria, two of them now live in Portland. Filmed in the back room of Crazy Carl's Furniture and Rugs on 36th and Division.
