1. Students in a special education 6th grade classroom read several short stories and novels and identified one important message communicated by the writer. Students then wrote essays that first identified the big idea, matched the appropriate evidence from the stories, and finally connected the theme to their own lives. Students were videotaped reading their essays and interviewing each other about the experience.
