'New Maps of Time' is a workshop about mapping spaces (mental, architectural and environmental) using sound as a means to analyze and express actions within a space. These videos can be considered documents of our activities and sketches of ideas that can be developed further. The workshop was held in April 2010 and was organized by EMMEDIA. The recordings here feature contact microphones placed directly on the structure of the bridge itself. No processing or modification of the recordings were done, what you hear is what you see.
A demo/walkthrough of my installation entitled 'Color a Sound' which was set up at RPI's West Hall Gallery 111 for the month of April 2010.
The interaction is meant to be very simple and playful, hence the major scale. It would be much more difficult for someone to walk up and have fun with a chromatic scale. Like any instrument, one would have to spend a lot of time to make a composition worth listening to and this is just a demo of the sonic abilities/responsiveness.
There are two previous videos of when I first developed this from a couple years ago as well, but they only show the point of view of the analysis camera and not the device itself. If you're curious, videos are available here: vimeo.com/953967 vimeo.com/866382
Would love to install this again...and if anyone wants the ugly max patch you can get it here: http://blairneal.com/blog/color-a-sound/ ..I'll hopefully clean it up soon
Check out Cedric Paquette's video where he uses a modified version of my code for his own composition: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1APk6XtFrmM
