Separation and Combination focuses on the theme of interconnected and complementary relationships. “Relationships” among the lights, targets, and mountains are compared to the “relationships” among people. The two-channel video explores separation and combination among ideas, time and space. It also appreciates both individuality and harmony in life.
When I create art, I typically go the more traditional route Since I beginning with formal training, I have struggled with creating conceptual art. I prefer to paint an apple realistically rather than conceptualize it. This piece shown on two monitors compares the two approaches to creating art using the same subject matter. The conceptual side is a parody on post-modern thinking.
Breathing On/Off explores the involuntary actions of a conscious mind intentionally controlling and manipulating a source of energy that we all encounter on a daily basis; a light bulb. Breathing in and exhaling out is an instinctive action we all must do to survive.
This two-channel video is a reflection and exposition of the unique connection that I have with my mother and grandmother. The person who I thought was my mother turned out to be my grandmother the whole entire time I was growing up.. The connection with my grandmother is manifest as a very close relationship, yet so separated.
In “A Meandering” I create an ease around talking about spirituality and how that can intersect with religion. Demystifying the word spirit in my life has been a long process. As a child it was generally confusing to me when people would say things like “I’m not religious I’m spiritual” and then not be able to articulate what that actually means more than “Well you know, spiritual”. In this video I ask the audience to consider the spiritual for what it is at its core: whatever that is (in their life).
