Celestial Lights is my second video project. It is another stop motion based video about the northern lights. The video is shot in the northern parts of Norway, Finland and Sweden during autumn 2011, winter and spring 2012.
If you like the video, please feel free to share it!
If you have access to proper audio hardware, please connect and turn up the volume to enjoy the fantastic music composed by Norwegian composer Kai-Anders Ryan. Not only is Kai-Anders a great musical talent, he is also very professional and a joy to work with.
For those who do not know, auroras are caused by solar activity. This is shortly visualized in the video. Our suns activity varies in 11 year cycles, and we are closing solar maximum (solar max) for our current solar cycle somewhere between 2012-2013, and solar activity with corresponding auroral activity has clearly been picking up. The beginning of 2011 was lots of clouds but weather improved late 2011 and out 2012. This video contains recordings from some of the most spectacular auroral displays I have ever witnessed, and I have seen a few.
For this video I did shoot approx 150.000 exposures from sept.2011 - april.2012 using Canon DSLR's and various wide angle lenses. Approx 6.000 frames in this video. To achieve pannings I used the fantastic Stage Zero + MX2 controller time-lapse gear from Dynamic Perception.
The video is a merge of two parts; the first part contains some more wild and aggressive auroras, as well as a few milky way sequences, hence either auroras are moving fast because they are, or they are fast due to motion of the milky way / stars. Still, some of the strait up shots are very close to real-time speed, although auroras mostly are slower, she can also be FAST! The second part has some more slow and majestic auroras, where I have focused more on composition and foreground. The music should give you a clear indication of where you are :)
Again, choosing what sequences to use was a battle, and many good sequences will have to wait for a later project I am working on ;) - More info about this will be announced on my facebook site. facebook.com/arcticlightphoto
This video summarizes the end of a hectic aurora season for me, and my last shots was done only a few days ago. However now the late sunlight is making it hard to shoot the auroras at night up here, so I decided enough was enough for now, and time to release the video.
I have driven thousands of km between locations up here in the arctic this season, and while on location(s) I was running between 2-3 cameras like a madman, and almost every sequence you see in this video also has been shot using circular fish-eye optics, for yet another project to come. Luckily I had some good company on many of the cold nights.

Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy!
This video is my first larger scale time lapse compilation cut down to over 10k photo frames equaling 33 scenes of various night sky events from Northern Michigan. It took a year to shoot in many cold nights with lots of coffee, a bit tenacity and persistence to get this into a form of coherent electrified cosmic goodness.
Night sky-capes include multiple northern lights scenes, meteor showers, nebulae, planets, including Venus and Jupiter setting , constellations, the milky way, comet Pan-Starrs, night-scapes over both Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.
Thought I might mention some of the more interesting wildlife encounters during the photo gathering-
1.sparring moose on Isle Royale under a pitch black sky after wrapping the Isle Royale Tobin Harbor airglow / northern lights opening scene at 3am in the morning, with their thunderous antlers clashing with fear inducing power that could be felt in the knashing soundwaves echoing in the hills, (and I had to hike a two mile 'deer path' back to my shelter in the direction of those moose, I survived to tell the tale without getting pancaked)
2. the howl of wolves in the eastern UP piercing the freezing air under a calm full moon sky
3.a particularly persistent beaver on an inland lake in the Hiawatha National Forest, determined to be in just about every frame with a methodically spaced tail slap on an otherwise beautifully FLAT CALM star reflected lake- sooo even though the star reflection sequence is blown by this beaver with a 'tude, the scene is included anyway as a humorous memory
4. the blue heron fishing for a midnight snack by auroral light at the mouth of Sand River and Lake Superior- if only I would have not moved, this heron would have walked the river bank thru the entire frame..
Rare pairings caught on camera include ribbons of aurora above a full moon fogbow on the horizon of Lake Superior, the aurora and an isolated singular lightning storm cloud over Lake Superior, and the aurora and Milky Way in several scenes including Copper Harbor, Marquette, Isle Royale, Pictured Rocks, and Eagle Harbor Lighthouse.
There are also a couple sequences of rare magenta/red aurora that I will never tire of. 3:45, 4:26
Blue Heron paused at 00:57 before I accidentally scared him away 00:15 incredible color spectrum of airglow and aurora- Isle Royale with big dipper reflection 1:54 lightning and aurora in July 2:13 Meteor Shower 2:40- beaver tail slap 2:54 Lake Superior Ice currents 3:36- featured on NBC Nightly News April 2012 5:07- Venus, Jupiter setting 5:42-PanStarrs 6:03-full moon Fogbow over Lake Superior under northern lights
Thanks to Brian Malone for getting the scene at 2:54.
I feel extremely fortunate to have witnessed and photographed the several strong auroral outbursts shown here from 2012 at a relatively southern 46.5 degrees latitude in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and am so grateful for the advances in high iso dslr technology to allow for time-lapse capture to be able to create these sequences for such high quality video reproduction of the night sky.
All scenes are within 200 miles or so of my home in Marquette, Mi. and I feel very blessed to live where I do and to share the beauty that I see 'in my own backyard' with you. I hope it inspires others to take time to find the beauty that is everywhere around us and also to raise an awareness about the importance of preserving our night wondrous starlit skies.
A special thanks to David Helpling and Jon Jenkins who granted permission to use their spectacular track, " Lifted" - from the album "The Crossing" , thanks again David and Jon- so glad to know of this track, I couldn't have thought of a more fitting and inspiring piece of music as a contributing impetus to the completion of this project- you can find more of David Helpling and Jon Jenkins music at spottedpeccary.com.

One of the Infinity List boys ventured to Bali for some sun, surf and seafood. Together with his girlfriend they captured the relaxing beach lifestyle that Bali leads. One week under a thatched roof on the beach, waking to the sound of the waves and rolling to bed after seafood BBQ.
