This video deals with the impact of managerialist strategies on the subjectivity of workers from environmental organizations. Such NGOs are the fastest growing type of third sector organizations in Brazil. These agencies have played a key role in the processes of political change and democratization. They built their image as humanist platforms committed to sustainability. In recent years, these organizations began to face mounting competition from their peers, governments and corporations. Since funding is becoming increasingly dependent on the organization’s performance and accountability, NGOs are resorting to imitation and importing knowledge from the private sector. Corporate culture is usually oriented by a managerialist ideology, which sees economic determinism, not values, as the main strategy driving force. Tactics such as the cult of excellence and mobilization of the psyche are used to frame subjects as strategic assets in a context of job intensification and acceleration. The managerialist environment is also marked by quantophrenia and precarization of labor relations. This qualitative study has covered four of some of the foremost environmental organizations in Brazil, half of them being cosmopolitan agencies with headquarters in metropolises and half peripheral, situated in the Amazon region. The results of discourse analysis show that workers are assimilating the managerialist discourse and using it to justify behaviors contrary to their substantive value system. The interviews also indicate that the establishment of financial efficiency as the most important strategic factor is leading organizations to hire their new collaborators on a more precarious and sometimes illegal basis. Ultimately, the studied subjects consider themselves to be growing apart from their representations of humanist and politically active social actors.
